As part of meeting the Green Attraction criteria, the Royal Danish Collection had energy screenings of Koldinghus, Rosenborg Castle and Amalienborg Museum, to get insights into how they could improve their electricity and heating consumption.

About Green Attraction

Green Attraction is an eco-label that targets attractions, museums and zoos in Denmark. The eco-label is awarded to attractions that make an extra effort to take care of the environment. All attractions with Green Attraction must meet a wide range of criteria for environmentally friendly operation.

The criteria are divided into mandatory criteria, where all must be met, and point-criteria, where 40% of the criteria must be met. There is a total of 17 different main areas. The eco-labeled attractions must all document that they meet the criteria.

The Royal Danish Collection

The Royal Collection is a museum collection whose purpose is to tell Danish history through the eyes of the kings. During the project, the museum had three departments, Rosenborg Castle, Amalienborg Museum and Koldinghus. As of January 1st 2025, the museum has also taken over the operation of Christiansborg Castle and the Eremitage Castle.

In order to meet the criteria of Green Attraction, the Royal Collection has received advice and an energy screening of Koldinghus, Rosenborg Castle and Amalienborg Museum to get insights into how they could reduce electricity and heating consumption as well as CO2 emissions in the three departments.

Energy Screening and Energy-saving Measures

An energy screening examines the location’s energy consumption and maps out possibilities for energy optimization.

The energy screenings consisted of a physical inspection of all three locations. Since all buildings are protected, the primary focus was on technical installations. Here, the buildings were examined for energy renovations that can be carried out in protected buildings.

We made energy reports that presented specific proposals for future energy-saving initiatives for all three locations.
In the reports, we calculated the following for each proposed measure:

P2GreeN

Since 2022, we have been involved in the 4-year EU project, P2GreeN. The project aims to develop, test and adapt a circular loop where human sanitary waste is converted into bio-based fertilizer for agriculture.

The food supply chain is currently linear, which simply means that agriculturally grown food is produced with the addition of energy-intensive fertilizer, the consumer consumes it, and then the loop ends. This results in the loss of large amounts of valuable and limited nutrients in the EU.

The P2GreeN project therefore aims to transform this loop from linear to circular, so valuable nutrients benefit agriculture instead of going to waste, with negative downstream consequences for waterways.

The P2GreeN consortium consists of a total of 32 European partners from 12 different countries. In collaboration with the project’s other partners, we are examining the potential for bio-based fertilizer through pilot projects in Sweden, Germany and Spain, where human sanitary waste is recycled and used as fertilizer.

Transition’s role in the project is to make circular business models and investigate the possibilities for starting, developing and scaling a circular collaboration in agriculture.

Bellagroup

Bellagroup has been reporting on ESG for several years. After the adoption of the CSRD and the new reporting standard, ESRS, they wanted to report according to the new framework. According to the standard, a double materiality analysis must be carried out. Transition has helped Bellagroup to carry out the analysis.

Bellagroup is one of Denmarks largest companies within hotels, conferences and trade fairs and consists of, among others, Bella Center Copenhagen, Bella Arena and Bella Sky Conference & Event.

Bellagroup has voluntarily chosen to work with ESG reporting since 2018. They have previously reported according to the standard The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), but with the adoption of the EU directive, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), they wanted to report according to the new reporting standard, ESRS, which is under the CSRD.

An essential part of the standard is double materiality analysis. The analysis is comprehensive, and Transition has therefore helped Bellagroup carry it out.

The double materiality analysis and the process behind it

In a double materiality analysis, both internal and external factors are assessed to identify the most significant ESG themes that require action and reporting.

The analysis was not entirely foreign to Bellagroup, since the GRI standard also includes a materiality analysis. However, there is a significant difference between the two analyses. With double materiality, companies not only assess impact materiality, but also financial materiality. This means that there is both an inside-out and outside-in perspective. Hence, the name double materiality.

Bellagroup is a large organization with many different business areas, which is important to take into account when performing a doble materiality analysis. To perform the analysis, we structured the process based on the following steps:

First, we needed to understand Bellagroup, their industry, and value chain.
Then, Transition, in collaboration with Bellagroup, identified the impacts that could be significant across E, S and G.
Together, we identified the most significant issues based on an assessment of severity, probability and irreparability as well as financial opportunities and risks
All issues were subsequently ranked in a materiality matrix
Transition then quality assured all impacts and quantifications
Finally, the materiality matrix was sent for comment to selected internal and external stakeholders.

The analysis is a strong strategic tool

The double materiality analysis forms the basis for which disclosure requirements are material for Bellagroup to report on. But this is not the only quality of the analysis.

The double materiality analysis has provided valuable insights into Bellagroup’s opportunities and risks, which they can use strategically in their future work with efforts and initiatives within E, S and G.

As part of meeting the criteria of Green Attraction, Home of Carlsberg had a comprehensive energy screening of their property in the Carlsberg City at Gamle Carlsberg vej 15. The screening helped them map their electricity and heating consumption.

What is Green Attraction?

Green Attraction is an environmental label that targets attractions, museums and zoos in Denmark. The environmental label is awarded to attractions that make an extra effort to be green and take care of the environment. All attractions with Green Attraction must meet a wide range of criteria for environmentally friendly operation.

The criteria are divided into mandatory criteria, where all must be met, and criteria of points, where 40% of the criteria must be met. There is a total of 17 different main areas. The labeled attractions must be able to document that they meet the criteria.

Home of Carlsberg

Home of Carlsberg is a cultural attraction located in the middle of the Carlsberg City. Here, guests can experience an interactive exhibition, walk the brewers’ horses in the stables, and get food and drinks.

Home of Carlsberg is heated with district heating, and the building is protected, which means there are restrictions on what external changes can be made in connection with energy renovations and renovations in general.

Home of Carlsberg wanted to map the current emissions, and at the same time seek advice in relation to possible improvements in relation to meeting the criteria of the Green Attraction certification. Transition has helped them by carrying out an energy screening of the location.

Energy Screening and Energy Saving Measures

The energy screening consisted of a physical inspection of the location with a special focus on technical installations and the building shell. Here, the building was reviewed for energy renovations that can be carried out in a protected building.

The energy screening resulted in an energy report that contains concrete proposals for future energy-saving measures. For all possible measures, the report includes calculations for the following:

Estimated financial investment for the project
Financial savings
Simple payback period
CO2 reduction in kg CO2/year based on projected emission factors

Bellagroup

Through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), companies can set and have their CO₂ reduction targets validated. However, in order to receive validation, companies must meet high standards. Transition has supported Bellagroup in preparing to join the initiative.

Bellagroup is one of Denmark’s largest companies within hotels, conferences, and exhibitions. The company has worked with ESG for several years, and Transition has collaborated with the organization on multiple occasions. We have, for instance, assisted with the execution of a double materiality assessment and, most recently, with meeting the requirements of SBTi.

What is SBTi?

SBTi is a recognized and globally established initiative that helps companies set science-based targets for reducing their CO₂ emissions. SBTi also validates the targets, which strengthens the credibility of a company’s commitment to emissions reductions.

Carbon Accounting and Reduction Targets

SBTi requires high-quality carbon accounting and the development of a reduction plan aligned with the targets.

Transition supported Bellagroup in meeting these requirements by first ensuring the quality of the company’s carbon reporting according to the GHG Protocol. This included documenting the boundaries of the carbon inventory and identifying relevant Scope 3 categories.

Additionally, we helped Bellagroup develop reduction targets, including goals related to food and the supply chain. This work involved scenario analyses and identifying initiatives that can contribute to Bellagroup achieving its reduction goals.

By joining SBTi, Bellagroup has committed to ambitious targets: a 60% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.

Among the First Major Danish Companies in the Sector

In February 2025, Bellagroup received official validation of their reduction targets. This makes Bellagroup one of the first major Danish companies in the hotel and hospitality sector to have its targets validated through SBTi.

This validation enables Bellagroup to clearly communicate their level of ambition, their reduction targets, and the concrete initiatives being implemented — for instance, through their ESG reporting.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is the first Danish museum to be certified with both Green Attraction and Green Key. Achieving these certifications required significant effort. Transition supported the museum throughout the entire certification process from A to Z.

Over the past few years, Wonderful Copenhagen and MeetDenmark have offered a free business program for hotels and tourism companies, helping them achieve relevant certifications.

Since 2023, Transition has been involved as an advisor for the business program. Since then, we have helped nearly 40 companies obtain relevant certifications, including Green Key, Green Attraction, and Green Tourism Organization. One of these companies is Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

About Green Attraction and Green Key

Both Green Attraction and Green Key are certifications that set environmental standards for tourism businesses. Green Key is international, while Green Attraction is a Danish certification aimed specifically at attractions such as museums and amusement parks. To obtain these certifications, companies must meet specific criteria and go through an application and auditing process. For example, both labels require efforts in energy savings, water consumption, waste management, and procurement.

From Ambition to Certification

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek has worked for several years to reduce its environmental impact and implement sustainability initiatives in daily operations. The museum has, among other things, replaced 5,000 light sources with LED, improved its waste management and purchasing policy, and optimized technical systems to reduce energy consumption.

Transition assisted the museum in meeting the requirements of both Green Key and Green Attraction. We supported the preparation of necessary documentation, including the museum’s purchasing policy.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek’s efforts to meet the certification standards have resulted in them becoming the first museum in Denmark to achieve both Green Key and Green Attraction.

Certifications like Green Key and Green Attraction can provide great value to tourism businesses. They signal that the company takes responsibility, and the external auditing adds credibility. Furthermore, certifications offer a strategic framework that helps systematize sustainability efforts and prioritize initiatives within areas such as energy, waste, procurement, and supplier engagement.

Municipalities

The indoor climate is a challenge in many Danish schools and daycares. In collaboration with DCUM and Realdania, Transition has developed a tool that can map the likely indoor climate of buildings and its improvement opportunities. The tool has been used to screen the indoor climate in several municipalities across Denmark.

The indoor climate tool provides a strategic overview of the likely indoor climate in one’s building stock. The indoor climate is illustrated within the four pillars of the indoor climate; visual, acoustic, atmospheric and thermal indoor climate, in a level of detail right down to the room level. The tool can effectively provide an overview of the condition in a municipality in general, at individual schools, institutions, and in specific rooms. In addition, the tool is able to estimate the costs associated with improving the indoor climate.

Indoor climate experts have participated in precision testing the tool against regular indoor climate measurements. This showed a coincidence of 93%, which is why the tool is quite accurate, even though it requires relatively few measurements.

Frequently Used in Danish Municipalities

The tool is already used in a number of municipalities, including Frederikshavn Municipality, Ringsted Municipality, Hørsholm Municipality, Randers Municipality, Silkeborg Municipality and Kolding Municipality.

The indoor climate tool has currently mapped the indoor climate in 208 primary schools and 269 daycares, corresponding to 19% of all Danish primary schools and 6.7% of Danish daycares. Below is a comprehensive overview of the municipalities that have used the tool to screen schools and daycares, respectively.

The indoor climate tool has been developed so that it can now be used to screen schools, daycares, and care centers. The tool for schools has also been further developed into the IK-tjek program, which is available free of charge, under the leadership of DCUM. We also offer screenings with IK-tjek.

Son of a Tailor

What difference can it make to the carbon footprint of a t-shirt if it is produced per order versus mass-produced? Transition has examined this in a project with the clothing brand Son of a Tailor by reviewing the brand’s business model and preparing a life cycle analysis for one of their cotton t-shirts.

The Copenhagen-based clothing brand Son of a Tailor has built its entire business model around the concept of made-to-order, where they produce tailor-made clothing to order. By having a business model where they only produce clothing based on customer demand, they avoid overproduction. At the same time, the concept where they tailor the clothing helps them avoid returns.

Son of a Tailor wanted to obtain documentation of whether their made-to-order business model has a smaller carbon footprint, compared to mass production. To investigate this, Transition prepared a comprehensive life cycle analysis (LCA) of Son of a Tailor’s cotton t-shirts. The life cycle analysis examines the product’s emissions from cradle to grave, which is why it provides insight into both the total Carbon footprint and which phases the emissions are the highest.

Results

The results of the life cycle analysis show that t-shirts produced with the made-to-order business model have a 25% smaller carbon footprint than mass-produced t-shirts from a cradle-to-gate perspective (Read more here). The results can be used as documentation when Son of a Tailor in the future communicates and promotes the benefits of ordering their t-shirts rather than one that is mass-produced.

Capital Region of Denmark

Strengthening circular economy skills in construction among builders requires a targeted approach. Transition has worked closely with the Capital Region of Denmark to develop a concept for a taskforce that specifically aims to build the skills of enterprising builders with an interest in circular solutions, recycling and demolition.

The Capital Region of Denmark’s goal with the new taskforce is to be able to offer advice on circular economy within construction-related activities to builders with an interest in the area. In return, the builder must contribute by sharing their work in cases about the construction projects, as a form of payment for the advice they receive.

Transition’s task has initially been to develop a concept for the taskforce, which is based on a target group analysis among other things.

From idea to development and concept

To develop the taskforce concept, Transition conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with various developers. The participants in the interviews represented both developers who are already actively working with circular economy, as well as those who want to get started.

The interview guide was prepared by anthropologists, while the interviews themselves were conducted by people with a construction background. During the interviews, the developers were asked about their thoughts on a taskforce within circular economy, their needs related to advice, and their perspective on sharing their project as payment for the advice. The results of the interviews revealed a number of trends and patterns that made it possible to identify specific needs among the target group.

The concept for the taskforce has been designed as a process consisting of 4 phases; Preservation, Demolition, Matchmaking, and Execution, where the developer is positioned based on the specific challenges of the project. An advisory team consisting of people with environmental, construction, legal, and professional skills within circular economy can be matched to the project based on its current position in the process. This helps to ensure targeted and customized advice that is in line with the specific project.

Frederikshavn Municipality

How can municipalities gain an overview of their buildings’ energy labels? And how can they improve their energy labels? Transition has helped Frederikshavn Municipality with these issues.

Many municipalities today lack a clear overview of which of their buildings have poor energy labels – and what it takes to improve the energy labels.

Frederikshavn Municipality wanted to visualize the energy labels for their buildings together with screening results and potentials from a previous collaboration with Transition.

In addition, Frederikshavn Municipality wanted to create an overview of the energy labeling of their buildings, especially due to the new upcoming EU directives, which are expected to impose requirements on the energy label.

Power BI Tool

Previously, Transition helped Frederikshavn Municipality develop and establish a Power BI tool that visualizes the results of our screenings of buildings in the municipality. The tool also provides insight into the potential if the municipality replaced windows, ventilation systems, etc. in specific buildings. With the tool, the municipality can easily follow their progress towards the annual savings targets. The municipality has thus gained an effective tool for presenting both improvement potentials, and the results achieved.

Transition has added an overview of the buildings’ energy labels in the system at the municipality’s request, to make it easy to make decisions about which buildings should be prioritized for energy improvements.

Dynamic Energy Labels

The project has focused on retrieving relevant energy label data directly from the energy label database and integrating it into the Excel sheets that the municipality already uses. We work with a calculation core that estimates the property’s dynamic and potential energy consumption – and thus the energy label. Transition has ensured that energy label data is updated automatically, so that the municipalities do not have to collect it manually themselves.

We have helped Frederikshavn Municipality build visualizations in Power BI that support the municipality’s strategic work with energy management, including compliance with current and future legal requirements. An overview of energy labels has been created at both portfolio and property level, as well as the extent of building automation in the municipality’s properties.

Future Strategy

Frederikshavn Municipality wants to use the knowledge about their buildings strategically so that they can better plan their future efforts for energy improvements.

The municipality has gained deeper insight into the distribution of energy labels and how they can potentially improve their energy labels.
